In the late 1800’s there was an influx of Italians immigrating to New York City. Most settled between Bleecker and Canal Street in smaller communities based on the regions of Italy they were from. However in recent years the expansion of SOHO and Chinatown has taken over much of what Little Italy was. While the days of the Godfather are long gone, the area survives as a shopping and culinary haven. It also inspired Dr. Seuss’ first book “And to think that I saw it on Mulberry St.” Little Italy also hosts the San Genarro Festival each September in honor of the Patron Saint of Sicily. Each year, the streets are blocked off to fill the streets with vendors and fair rides (they also have fried Oreos).
The area retains a unique charm with the vintage New York look. So take a stroll down Mulberry St. Explore and have fun!
