Before online dating, mail-order marriage provided confusion, heartbreak and romance. The love triangle between an older wine maker, a young waitress and a handsome foreman may be Frank Loesser’s greatest artistic triumph. The composer/lyricist of “Guys and Dolls” takes us to the rolling hills of Napa, California with his score filled with passion-filled, dramatic melodies.
Directed by William Wesbrooks with musical direction by Michael Ricciardone. The cast and orchestra will feature undergraduate and graduate students from the Program in Vocal Performance at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
Fred Armisen at Union Pool
This is exactly…the reason it’s outrageous is that no one…any mere assumption that we as a mass are gonna come together to…I wouldn’t…I think…once… If you’re like us, you could watch Fred Armisen do anything and be absolutely delighted. He acts, he tells jokes, he writes, he sings, he plays the drums—is there anything this man can’t do? Probably not. This month, he does one of the things he can do—play covers of some of his favorite songs—at Union Pool in Brooklyn. For more info, visit brownpapertickets.com.
The Apollo Theater is one of music’s major institutions. For more than 70 years, the historic Harlem performance hall, which first opened in 1914 as Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater, has hosted pioneers of soul, jazz, rock and R&B—who later went on to become superstars—including Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and Luther Vandross. So what better way is there for NYC & Company to celebrate Black History Month than by choosing the Apollo as its February Culture Spot? All month long, enjoy $3 off admission to Amateur Night at the Apollo, $5 off Apollo Music Café shows and $3 off historic tours on Wednesday at 11am with the Culture Spot coupon. (And for more Black History Month events, see ourroundup.)
